FAAN To Shut Owerri Airport Runway For 25 Days

Published on

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily shut the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days from October 20, 2026, to carry out essential repairs and resurfacing.

The proposed closure, which is subject to final confirmation, is aimed at addressing deteriorating sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks aggravated by recent heavy rainfall.

The rehabilitation is also expected to include runway extension to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as passenger and flight traffic to the region increases.

In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the intervention had become necessary to restore the runway to a safer operational condition and improve airport infrastructure ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger traffic during the Christmas season.

According to the authority, the repair works will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections of the runway.

The planned extension is expected to improve the airport’s capacity to handle larger aircraft, enhance passenger comfort and facilitate a more seamless travel experience.

FAAN advised passengers intending to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative travel arrangements.

The authority added that it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and communicate the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised.

FAAN appealed to passengers, airlines and other airport users to cooperate with the authority as it undertakes the rehabilitation works.

The authority, however, reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and reliable airport operations across the country.
